Fact Sheet: Josh Jensen, Owner/Winemaker/Generalissimo, Calera Wine Company

Name & Title:
Josh Jensen, Owner/Winemaker/Generalissimo

Winery name and location: Calera Wine Compnay, Hollister, California. The world's only 7-level gravity-flow winery.

Annual case production: 30,000 cases

Planted acres: 83.6 acres

Career background: I started Calera 34 years ago.

What has been your biggest professional challenge? Getting people to
understand that the town of Hollister AND our vineyards' locations at 2,200 up to 2,500 feet above sea level are cooler than almost all vineyard locations in the North Coast. (I can prove it using U.C. Berkeley's 30-year temperature averages for all California cities and towns.)

Varietals that your winery is known for: Pinot Noirs (Seven different bottlings each year). Chardonnays. Viognier -- I petitioned the U.S.D.A. to import Viognier cuttings in 1973 when it did not exist in this country. And Aligoté (between 50 and 100 cases produced a year.)

Why I read Wine Business Monthly:

I have really enjoyed your reviews of the different types of solar panels that are available currently and those that are in development for future applications in winery design and use. It certainly seems to be a hot topic (pun intended), but now that I've read that criminals have started stealing panels I'm a little discouraged about taking the plunge. A number of my friends in the business have gone solar, though, and they report that they're very happy with their installations.

I really liked the article on "Rainwater Harvesting" in your June issue. We started collecting rainwater from our roofs two winters ago, getting over 20,000 gallons from just a small portion of our roof area this past winter. Not bad for such a lousy, dry winter with just 12 inches of rain for the year.
